How to pay for Staten Island Express bus? ›

Express buses

Board through the front doors and tap your contactless credit or debit card, smartphone, or wearable device at the OMNY reader, a rectangular screen near the driver.

Express bus: $7 (Reduced Fare, during off-peak hours only, will remain at $3.25) Paratransit and Access-A-Ride: $2.90.

All routes run during rush hours in the peak direction. In addition, the SIM1C, SIM3C, SIM4C and SIM33C provide off-peak weekday and weekend service, and the SIM1C provides overnight service. These four -C routes cover most stops in Manhattan served by other routes during peak hours.

Signs at some express bus stops throughout the borough have already been replaced with ones featuring the new routes set to take effect on August 19. The previously used "X" routes have been dropped in favor of "SIM"-- or Staten Island to Manhattan -- routes.

Fast facts: All city buses accept the MetroCard, SingleRide ticket, OMNY contactless payments, and exact coin change (no pennies or paper money).

The MetroCard is a magnetic stripe card used for fare payment on transportation in the New York City area. It is a payment method for the New York City Subway (including the Staten Island Railway), New York City Transit buses and MTA buses.

The normal bus will stop at every designated bus stop along its route whereas the express bus will only stop at a select few. Check if the express bus stops at your desired bus stop before boarding (ask the bus captain, use a bus app or google maps). An express bus costs more than the normal bus.

Express bus services cost 60 cents more than regular bus and MRT rides for adults. The fares are charged by distance and range from $1.59 to $2.86 if paid for using a travel card.

Fare for most riders on subways and local, limited, and Select Bus Service buses: $2.90. Express buses cost $7.

If you're 65 or over, you can sign up in person and receive your new Reduced-Fare MetroCard the same day. If you have a disability, you can receive in-person, individualized assistance from a station agent and get a temporary Reduced-Fare MetroCard to use while your application is processed.

Routes with an "X" prefix are express routes. Some stops serve more than one bus. Look at the Guide-A-Ride to make sure the bus you want will be stopping there. Buses display their route number on the front, and sometimes the back.

Express buses generally travel between Manhattan and one of the other four boroughs, although there are a few exceptions, I believe. Local buses make stops about every 2–4 blocks along a route. Some routes have limited stop buses, also, making stops at major cross streets.

OMNY is available throughout New York City

OMNY is available at all subway stations and on all buses, allowing you to tap and go throughout New York City. You can use OMNY with your own contactless card or smart device.

Up to three children under 44 inches tall ride for free when they're with a fare-paying adult. You pay the fare at turnstiles before you board the train. You don't have to do anything as you exit.

The new double decker bus, manufactured by Alexander Dennis Inc., provides increased passenger capacity while maintaining the comfortable, smooth ride of an express bus. The bus provides approximately 42 percent more seating capacity, with 81 to 83 reclining seats, as opposed to 57 seats on standard express buses.

Fares – All MTA New York City Transit trains (subways and Staten Island Railway) and local buses (including Limited-Stop and +SelectBusService buses at MetroCard® fare collection machines) accept MetroCard. MetroCard® may be purchased at vending machines located at St George terminal and at Tompkinsville station.

You do not need a ticket to ride the Staten Island Ferry. How often does the Ferry operate? The Ferry runs 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. More frequent service, (every 15 or 20 minutes,) is provided on the weekdays during the rush hours of 6:00AM- 9:30AM and 3:30PM-8:00PM, with 30-minute service to follow.
