- Maleic anhydride (cis-butenedioic anhydride, toxilic anhydride, dihydro-2,5-dioxofuran) is an organic compound with the formula C4H2O3. In its pure state it is a colourless or white solid with an acrid odour.
- Maleic anhydride was traditionally manufactured by the oxidation of benzene or other aromatic compounds.
- Maleic anhydride is also produced by reaction of butane with oxygen using the vanadium phosphorus oxide heterogeneous catalyst.

- In general, demand for MA is governed by the economic situation in the country. Thus, in 2001-2006, the average annual MA market
growth rate was 2.8% in the USA and 3.5% in Western Europe, while in Japan it dropped by 1.4%. Global MA consumption grew by
6-7% a year to 1.5m mt/y in 2006. Current consumption growth rate slowed down a little. - MA market is mature, while the application areas of this chemical are well-formed and stable.
- Growth in the worldwide maleic anhydride industry is predominantly in the butane-to-maleic anhydride route, often at the expense of benzene-based production.
- In Russia, the demand for MA reaches around 10K mt/y.
- The present, global production, of MA, is, about, 500,000 TPA and the demand growth rate is, around, 5% per annum.
- Maleic anhydrides markets are mature. The largest application sector, unsaturated polyester resins is sensitive to economic conditions and will reflect GDP-type growth.
- Maleic anhydrides second largest application sector is lubricating oil additives.
- MA is a basic chemical used in automotive, shipbuilding, paint and varnish, construction, agricultural chemistry and other industries.
- Maleic anhydride is used for the production of unsaturated polyesters, 1,4-butanediol, polymeric materials, alkyd and polymeric resins, synthetic fibres, detergents, pharmaceuticals, fuel additives and stabilizers, fumaric and malic acids.
- It is widely applied in the preparation of certain agricultural chemicals. Polyester resins account for 50% of global MA (63% in the
USA). - Maleic anhydride's largest use today is in the production of unsaturated polyester resins.
- Maleic anhydride and maleic acid are important raw materials used in the manufacture of phthalic-type alkyd and unsaturated
polyester resins, surface coatings, lubricant additives, plasticizers (qv), copolymers (qv), and agricultural chemicals. - Other applications where maleic anhydride is used include the production of agricultural chemicals, malic acid, copolymers, fumaric acid, lubricant additives, surfactants and plasticizers.
