It tastes better than the kind in the bottle, and it’s made with simple, clean ingredients you can find in any grocery store.

I’m excited to show you how to make blue cheese dressing (hint: it takes 5 minutes!), but be warned: You’ll want to put it on just about everything! It’s the best blue cheese dressing I’ve ever tried.

Ingredients & Substitutions

This section explains how to choose the best blue cheese dressing ingredients, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card below.

  • Mayonnaise – I like to use my own homemade mayo when I have time, but store-bought works too. Greek yogurt will also work as a substitute, but the flavor will be different.
  • Sour Cream – Gives the dressing a tangy flavor. If you opt for Greek yogurt above, you can substitute the sour cream with that as well.
  • Crumbled Blue Cheese – Of course you need blue cheese for a blue cheese salad dressing recipe! Sometimes this is called bleu cheese at the store, which is the same thing with the French spelling. The crumbles provide texture, as well as a powerful intense flavor. You can also use Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Stilton, and Cambazola.
  • Lemon Juice – I used bottled lemon juice for convenience, because you only need a teaspoon. But you could get juice from freshly squeezed lemons as well.
  • Almond Milk– The milk thins out the dressing. I used store-bought unsweetened almond milk, but you could make almond milk at home, or use any milk you prefer (dairy milk, coconut milk, heavy cream, half and half, etc). Buttermilk would also work if you like.
  • Sea Salt& Black Pepper

How To Make Blue Cheese Dressing

Simply whisk together the ingredients in a medium bowl or mason jar: Mayonnaise, sour cream, blue cheese crumbles, lemon juice, almond milk, sea salt, and black pepper.

TIP: Use a spoon to press the blue cheese pieces against the sides of the bowl or jar.

This helps the blue cheese flavor incorporate into the dressing.

Storage Instructions

Store homemade blue cheese dressing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.

Freezing is not recommended, as it will separate and no longer be creamy when you thaw it.

If you won’t be able to eat all of it within a week, just cut the recipe in half. Since it takes just 5 minutes to make, it’s easy to whip up another batch when you need it.

Ways To Use Blue Cheese Dressing

Just like my poppyseed dressing, you can add this easy blue cheese dressing to so many dishes — or just your favorite healthy salad recipes! Here are some of our favorite ways to use it:

  • Salads – Elevate your grilled chicken salad with the rich and tangy flavors of this dressing. It’s also the perfect pairing for classic options like a wedge salad or cobb salad.
  • Buffalo Flavors – I always serve buffalo wings with blue cheese (and ranch), but it’s just as flavorful with buffalo cauliflower bites or juicy baked buffalo chicken.
  • Veggie Dip – This recipe for blue cheese dressing is the perfect dip for crisp and crunchy vegetables, like cucumbers, bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or cherry tomatoes.
  • Burgers – Add a little zing to your next burger — and include slices of baked bacon for over-the-top flavor.
  • Steaks – Add tang and creaminess to a grilled steak, thick and juicy New York strip, or quick and easy air fried filet mignon.
  • Soup – Instead of using sour cream, add a dollop to my favorite chili recipe, a savory broccoli cheddar soup, or creamy celery root soup.
  • Potatoes – Try mixing it into mashed potatoes (or cauliflower mash), drizzling it on top of an air fryer baked potato, or toss with roasted potatoes for a rich and creamy side dish.

FAQs

Why does my homemade blue cheese dressing get watery? ›

Why does my homemade blue cheese dressing get watery? As blue cheese dressing sits, the water in the sour cream can begin to separate. That's natural. Just stir the dressing before you spoon it onto the salad or sandwich.

How long does blue cheese dressing last in the refrigerator? ›

To be on the safe side, I would keep homemade blue cheese dressing no more than 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator. Make it in smaller quantities so you don't waste it. If anything with cheese or milk base develops a strange color (often pink) or an off odor, definitely throw it out.

Is blue cheese dressing healthy? ›

The delicious crumbles that make blue cheese dressing a fan favorite can also make it dangerous for a balanced diet. Packed with sodium and saturated fat, this popular option can be full of extra calories. But if it's your favorite dressing, there's a silver lining – there are plenty of great substitutions out there.

Is blue cheese salad dressing high in cholesterol? ›

Blue cheese dressing also contains 4.6 milligrams of cholesterol in 1 tablespoon as well as a combination of heart-healthy fats and saturated fats. Reduced-fat or fat-free varieties of blue cheese are available from commercial salad dressing companies.

How do I thicken my blue cheese dressing? ›

There are lots of other recipes so might be worth finding one with less liquid to dry ingredients: more cheese, or other dry ingredients like mustard powder or onion powder. You can thicken it by blending some of the cheese in or adding more cheese by crumbling.

Is it okay to freeze blue cheese dressing? ›

Storage. Homemade blue cheese dressing will last 1 week in the refrigerator in a sealed container. You can also freeze it for 3 months in freezer bags or containers. That's it, my friends.

How long can you eat blue cheese after the expiration date? ›

An unopened package should keep its quality until the expiration date listed on the label and may potentially remain fresh for an additional 2 to 3 weeks if refrigerated properly.

How do you store blue cheese in the fridge? ›

How to store it. Stored carefully and appropriately, blue cheese should last a few weeks in your refrigerator. Store it in the coolest, driest part — some experts recommended the crisper — and keep it well wrapped in the cheese paper it came in, if possible.

Is blue cheese good for your gut? ›

Researchers have proved it's actually good for you. Along with other aged cheeses, blue cheese is great for your gut health and therefore you're over all well-being. Cheese is one of the foods many dieters ditch in the new year, thinking it's calorific because of the high fat content and will cause weight gain.

Can a diabetic have blue cheese dressing? ›

The good news is that blue cheese is diabetes-friendly since it's low in carbs and protein-rich. Research has also found that a higher intake of fermented dairy foods (blue cheese is fermented) is associated with a lower diabetes risk [*].

What is the unhealthiest salad dressing? ›

And at the top of that list? Caesar dressing. Made up of mayonnaise, cheese, salt and oil (and all too often, anchovies), Caesar tends to be one of the least healthy options out there. Those ingredients cause it to be high in both saturated fats and sodium.

Why is my blue cheese watery? ›

No need to worry-it's common for naturally aged cheeses to develop a small amount of moisture inside their packaging and is common in our blue cheeses. The liquid on the outside of your cheese is just excess moisture, or liquid whey. Simply blot your cheese with a paper towel and enjoy.

How do you fix watery dressing? ›

You can use xanthan gum to thicken your dressing. This stabilises emulsions (not being an emulsifier though) and increases viscosity (the stickiness). One of the major advantages of xanthan gum is that you don't need to heat your liquid. What you will have to do is whisk it thoroughly.

What if blue cheese sauce is too runny? ›

Blue cheese sauce is best the day you make it. However, if you have leftovers, you can store them covered in the fridge for three to five days. You can use it straight from the fridge or gently warm it on the stove over low heat. If it gets too runny, add a few more crumbles of blue cheese to help thicken it.
